Dive Team Briefing Template

Where a predive briefing checklist is a running order for what to say out loud, a briefing template is the document you prepare beforehand so the briefing itself is quick and complete, and so every team member can review it before the dive rather than hearing it for the first time on-site.

Step 1
Objective & plan

The dive's purpose and general shape

Step 2
Team roster

Full list with roles and buddy pairs

Step 3
Site & conditions

Access notes and expected conditions

Step 4
Limits & procedures

Organizer-entered, not calculated

Step 5
Emergency information

Facility, local number, emergency roles

What belongs in a briefing document prepared before the dive, not improvised at the dock.

What goes in the document

  • Dive objective and general plan
  • Full team roster with roles and buddy pairs
  • Site name, access notes, and expected conditions
  • Agreed limits and procedures (organizer-entered, not calculated)
  • Emergency information -- nearest facility, local emergency number, assigned emergency roles

Sharing it before the dive

A briefing template that's shared and reviewed in advance means questions come up while there's still time to answer them -- not on the boat, five minutes before the dive. Participants who can ask a question and get an organizer's response ahead of time show up better prepared.

Recording that the team reviewed it

A record that each participant reviewed the final version of the plan is useful documentation -- for the organizer's own recordkeeping, and as proof the information was actually shared. This is a review record, not a waiver or legal release.

Dive Backup organizes information entered by the dive team. It does not calculate whether a dive is safe or replace training, certification, professional judgment, dive computers, agency standards, or a live predive briefing.

Filling this in on paper works until conditions change or a diver drops out. Dive Backup turns it into a shared, reviewable plan your whole team can see, so nothing gets decided verbally and forgotten.
