Dive Team Role Sheet

Buddy pairs cover who's diving with whom; a role sheet covers who's responsible for what. On a larger or more complex dive, clear roles (who navigates, who tracks time and gas checkpoints out loud, who handles surface support) prevent the assumption that "someone else" is handling it.

Step 1
Navigation

One diver owns the route

Step 2
Timekeeping

Checkpoint calls, out loud

Step 3
Surface support

Boat or shore contact

Step 4
Equipment lead

Owns the predive equipment check

Step 5
Emergency roles

See the EAP template for a fuller list

Common roles worth assigning explicitly on a larger or more complex dive.

Common roles worth assigning explicitly

  • Navigation
  • Timekeeping / checkpoint calls
  • Surface support / boat contact
  • Equipment check lead
  • Emergency roles (see the EAP template for a fuller emergency-specific list)

Roles are a coordination tool, not a certification

Assigning a role documents who's agreed to handle a task on this dive -- it doesn't certify anyone to perform it, and it doesn't replace the training each diver already holds.

Dive Backup organizes information entered by the dive team. It does not calculate whether a dive is safe or replace training, certification, professional judgment, dive computers, agency standards, or a live predive briefing.

Filling this in on paper works until conditions change or a diver drops out. Dive Backup turns it into a shared, reviewable plan your whole team can see, so nothing gets decided verbally and forgotten.
